Catania Speaks English

English is a gateway to the wider world and MaBi English aims to be a step in the direction of increased English access in Italy, particularly in areas where school disengagement is common. With the support of Enrico Trantino, Mayor of Catania, and Punto Luce Save the Children Catania, working with children from disadvantaged neighbourhoods, we ran an in person English summer school for children in 2025. We created a collaborative and engaging teaching space, with each day containing a mixture of language instruction, group activities, and informal conversations to nurture confidence and growth. It was extremely rewarding to see the children grow more enthusiastic each day. By the end of our 2025 summer school, many were already asking when we would be back to do more. As soon as we finished sessions in July, we started meetings with members of the municipality and are set to return to Catania in the summer of 2026. The success of our work in Catania inspired us to set up a year-long programme in both language and mentoring that came to be known as MaBi English. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for our summer schools and are working at expanding this format to other italian municipalities.

MaBi English Online

MaBi’s mission centres around making English language instruction accessible and contributing to the breakdown of educational inequalities. We aim to cultivate a learning environment free from judgement and suitable for all skill levels. With this in mind, following on from the success of our in-person summer school in Catania and our work with the local municipality, we set up an ongoing online program, active throughout the school year, providing both language instruction and mentoring.

Language

MaBi Online provides free instructional videos teaching the English language in everyday situations. We post new lessons on our socials weekly that cover a wide variety of themes. We aim to make the videos fun and engaging and provide flashcards with key words for each one. This also allows us to stay connected with our summer students throughout the year, as well as to reach a broader audience.

Mentoring

Through our open mentoring hours via Google Meet, we offer an open and informal forum to give and receive advice and exchange ideas. If you are interested, have a look at our open mentoring hours schedule set out here, and simply join via the Google Meet link - no need to register in advance!
